THE TECHNICOLORS
THE TECHNICOLORS are a new, young American rock band based in Phoenix, Arizona. Formed by friends : front man Brennan Smiley (guitars and lead vocals), Jonathan Russo (drums), Mikey Fanizza (guitars and BGVs), Michael Nicolette (bass) and Greg Bennett (guitars, keyboards, and BGVs). THE TECHNICOLORS present an original blend of up-tempo modern rock and intimate acoustic music with folk influences. Their set also includes innovative, lively interpretations of classic rock. As of fall 2010, this set has begun rocking Arizona and neighbouring California with plans for a nationwide tour and dates in Europe and abroad in 2011.
“We know what we do is part of a longer tradition” says Smiley. “We realize that artists from the 70s and 80s wanted to be different, and thrived on creating that in the studio and on stage. We’re happy when people our age and older come to our shows and tell us they like to see musicians front and center again, being creative and sounding fresh”
Their debut release, WHO ARE YOU is available on CD and on iTunes (24 September 2010, Best Media Group). All the tracks are led by Smiley’s melodic tenor. Fast paced songs like “TO LOVE” resonate live as twin lead guitarists Smiley and Fanizza trade punchy licks and solos underscored by the pounding rhythm section of Russo, Nicolette and Bennett. “CITY WHERE YOU SLEEP”, is a melodic ballad supported by fiddle and upright bass while the lilting acoustic “ABRAHAM LINCOLN” tells the story of a penny and the different lives it encounters on its journey around the USA.
Growing up in a musical family in Nashville, TN, Brennan Smiley had already played professional sessions for rock, country and pop artists by the age of 13. Upon graduating from high school he wanted to do it for himself. “I grew up in the 90s”, says Smiley ”but much of what inspired me was jamming to my father’s old records by The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Pink Floyd – the best of the British Invasion.” Smiley began to craft his own demos- a mixture of guitar riffs and lyrics that he hoped to piece together someday.
When the family moved to Arizona, his father, Grammy nominated and ASCAP winning writer and producer Billy Smiley was convinced he had enough material to record an EP and challenged him to do it in 6 months.
Working shifts at local restaurants to help finance studio costs, Smiley realized the songs he was building demanded the energy of a band. Gradually assembling friends from other bands with different takes on rock music took time, but a synergy was built that manifests live and on record. Thus THE TECHNICOLORS was born.
